Apple’s annual WWDC event offered many of the announcements that investors and Apple fans were expecting.
During the virtual keynote, CEO Tim Cook and his colleagues unveiled Apple Intelligence, the company’s long-awaited approach to generative artificial intelligence. A new AI-powered Siri will bring enhanced voice capabilities to Apple’s devices.
The company also said that Chat GPT would be embedded into the next version of Apple’s operating systems.
Opportunities in artificial intelligence have been a singular focus of investors this year. Nvidia’s revenue was up 262% in the latest quarter, while Apple’s was down 4%.

Apple’s New AI Features Will Require an iPhone 15 Pro, at Least. Macs and iPads Get Wider Support.
The new Apple Intelligence on device AI platform will run on iPhone 15 Pro-the current highest end version of the smartphones. Mac and iPad support will go back a few more years, with all devices sporting M1 processors or later getting AI support. Apple launched its first M1 Macs back in 2020.
The device support, slipped into the wrap-up of the company’s lengthy WWDC keynote, is consistent with analysts’ expectations that Apple will try to leverage its new AI strategy to spur iPhone sales.
Apple Intelligence Includes AI-Generated Emojis and Other Features
Apple said its Apple Intelligence features will roll out across multiple devices.
Users can generate their own custom emojis for iMessages by providing a written description. Apple showed the example of a dinosaur on a snowboard. Users can also make these “Genmojis” look like real people.
Apple Unveils a New AI-Powered Siri
Apple offcially launched a long-awaited AI-powered Siri voice interface during the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference keynote. Shares fell slightly in the wake of the announcement, suggesting investors weren’t particularly impressed with the announcement.
Siri will be powered by the company’s just announced “Apple Intelligence” platform.
Apple Finally Unveils Its AI Platform. It’s Called ‘ Apple Intelligence’
CEO Tim Cook said Apple’s new AI platform would be called “Apple Intelligence.” It’s the first peak at the company’s At strategy for iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
Apple made the announcement as part of the keynote address at the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference.
Apple Intelligence includes new writing tools for summarizing and editing text, as well as image generation for photos, emojis, and GIFs. The tools can be used across both Apple apps and third party apps.
As expected, Apple Intelligence is intended to make it easier to get things done, aided by an understanding of your personal context, including the apps on your screen.
The company underlines that the system is built “with privacy at the core,” with on-device intelligence, avoiding sending data to the cloud.
Apple noted that in some cases, models will require more powerful models than fit on a phone requiring the use of cloud-based models. For that, Apple is launching what it calls “Private Cloud Compute,” which run on servers based on Apple silicon. The data is not accessible by Apple, to keep it private.
Apple Is Adding a New Passwords App
Apple said during its WWDC keynote Monday that is launching a dedicated Passwords app.
The app will allow users to store passwords for various accounts so that they’re filled in automatically.
Apple Names New Version of MacOS ‘Sequoia.’ Announces iPhone Mirroring on Macs.
Apple is naming the next version of its Mac operating system Sequoia, keeping its trend of naming new generations of software after someplace in California. Previous names included Sonoma, Catalina, Mojave, and Sierra.
Among other things, a new feature called “iPhone Mirroring” will bring control of a users iPhone onto their Mac. It’s the latest example of Apple more tightly coupling the two devices.
